Details

A structured handbag with a bow on one side, a stiletto heel kicked up on the other, and her name in bold capitals running between them on a flat base bar. It is the topper for a Sweet 16, an 18th, a quinceanera, or a birthday for the friend whose group chat is mostly outfit photos. Nothing about it is subtle, which is the point.

A socket is moulded into the base, hidden behind the lettering. It grips a standard upright cake fountain, the cone or cylinder type sold in the UK as an ice fountain, and holds it straight so the sparks go up between the bag and the shoe. The fountain is not included and is not something we sell, so pick one up wherever you buy party bits. The socket is designed for that upright type only, never thin handheld sparklers, and an adult should light it, follow the instructions on the firework and stay with it until it is out.

We 3D print each one to order in our small studio in Spain, in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic that holds a crisp edge on the heel and the bow. It is about 15 cm (6 in) wide, and the height varies a little with the length of the name. There are fourteen colours, four of them rainbow blends that shift under the lights. This is not an edible topper, so lift it off before the cake is cut.

  • Enter the name in the personalisation box, and we print your exact spelling, accents and spacing included — the design sets the name in capitals, so double-check it before ordering. There is no charge for it.
  • Pink on a burgundy cake is the pairing in the photos; black on pale icing is the one people order for an 18th.

The heel is why this design is printed rather than cut flat: the arch is hollow underneath, so a lit fountain behind it sends light through the gap and the shoe reads in outline.

Questions about this topper

Do I need to buy the ice fountain separately?

Yes. The topper is the holder. You supply a standard upright cake fountain, usually labelled ice fountain or cake fountain in UK shops, and slot it into the socket in the base. We do not sell fireworks. Handheld sparklers, the thin wire kind, are the wrong shape and are not safe in this holder.

Can I put a double-barrelled name or a short phrase on it?

Whatever you type in the personalisation box is what gets printed, so a double-barrelled name or a short phrase works. Bear in mind the topper stays about 15 cm (6 in) wide, so longer text prints smaller. One first name gives the boldest letters and the best result in photos.

Which colour photographs best against a dark cake?

Pink lettering on a dark cake and black on pastels are the two safest pairings. The four rainbow blends catch the light from a cake fountain particularly well, so if the sparks are the moment you are planning around, one of those is worth the gamble.

Is any part of the topper edible?

No. It is a decorative keepsake, not food. PLA is a rigid plant-based plastic. It rests on the icing like a candle holder and is lifted off before the cake is served. If you prefer no contact at all, sit it on a thin disc of baking paper or a small cake plaque.

Will the heel snap if I wash it and put it away?

It should not. The heel is printed as part of one solid piece rather than glued on, so it wipes clean under warm soapy water and goes back in the box. Plenty of people keep it on a shelf with the birthday photos. Avoid hot cars and direct sunlight, which soften PLA.

How long before a Sweet 16 should I order?

We print to order: printing takes 1-3 working days and tracked delivery another 5-10 business days, so allow up to 14 days in total. Shipping to Germany is EUR 9.62 per order, free from EUR 70. Three weeks ahead is comfortable.
