What is the best cake topper for a 40th birthday?

For men, the milestone golf topper: it carries his name and the number 40 together, so it survives as a keepsake. For women, the champagne name-and-age design. If the birthday is being marked with sarcasm rather than sentiment, "Survived Another Year" is the one people reach for, and it needs no number at all.

Do you do 18th and 21st birthday cake toppers?

Yes, and any other age you type. The champagne name-and-age topper takes 18, 21 or any number you like, and so does the milestone golf design with his name beside it — both with the built-in sparkler holder that makes the photograph. There is no separate 18th or 21st product to hunt for — you simply enter the number when you order.

How far in advance should I order a milestone birthday topper?

Two weeks is comfortable anywhere we deliver. Every topper is made to order in one to three working days and then delivered, tracked, in five to ten business days, so a fortnight covers the making and the post. Leave longer in June and July, when weddings and hen parties fill the bench.

Is the sparkler included?

No. Every design has the holder moulded into its base, but the ice fountain is bought separately — supermarkets and party shops stock them for a couple of euros. We are a printing studio rather than a firework retailer, and posting pyrotechnics across borders is a different trade with different rules.

Can I use the topper again next year?

The undated designs, yes. Anything with a specific age printed on it is a record of that particular birthday, which is rather the point, since 50 does not come round twice. Most people keep them: on a shelf, in a memory box, or handed on to whoever is turning 50 next.

A milestone birthday cake topper has one job: make the number the loudest thing in the room. These six designs cover 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th and 70th birthdays — a personalised name-and-age topper with champagne glasses, a golf design that carries a name and the milestone age together, a plain personalised golfer, a beer topper with the number cut into the pint, the sarcastic "Survived Another Year", and a genuinely rude one for people who would find anything tasteful insulting. All are 3D printed to order, roughly 15 cm wide, and all have a socket in the base for a standard ice-fountain sparkler, so the number arrives with sparks behind it instead of a wonky number candle.

Which topper for which milestone?

  • 18th and 21st: the champagne name-and-age design reads grown-up without being stuffy, and "Survived Another Year" lands very well with a crowd that has just finished exams. The champagne design takes the number; the sarcastic one prints its four fixed words and needs none.
  • 30th: the age where the joke toppers do most of the heavy lifting. "Survived Another Year" makes the point without a number at all, or the rude design if the group chat is that sort of group chat.
  • 40th and 50th: the milestone golf topper is the one to reach for with men, because it carries his name and the number together. For her, the champagne name-and-age design.

Ordering in time for a surprise party

Two things go wrong with surprise parties: the topper arrives late, or the topper arrives at the wrong house. We make each topper to order over one to three working days, and tracked delivery takes another five to ten business days, so allow a fortnight between clicking buy and lighting the fountain — more if the date cannot move. Send it to your address, not theirs.

If you are collecting the cake from a bakery on the day, the topper does not need to get there first. It goes on at the last minute, in a kitchen, out of sight, roughly ninety seconds before the cake comes out.

Cake size, placement and the venue question

These are about 15 cm across, which sits comfortably on a 7-inch cake and looks deliberate on an 8- or 10-inch one. On anything smaller than 6 inches it will overhang, which some people rather like. On a tiered cake it belongs dead centre on the top tier, with the fountain socket clear of bunting, balloon arches and low light fittings.

One practical note for a 40th or 50th in a hired room: check the venue's rules on indoor fountains before you buy a fountain. Plenty of function rooms and almost all marquees say no. The topper still works perfectly unlit — it is a solid printed number with his or her name on it either way — so a venue ban is not a reason to skip it.
